After studying Fine Art at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, I began a 40-year career in advertising as an art/creative director. From the start of my advertising career until 2015, I did not even pick up a paint brush as my days as an art director were spent conceptualising and drawing advertisements.
In 2015, I began to paint once again.
My work, which shifts between representational and abstract, is heavily influenced by the advertising design principles of balance in colour, shape and space. I am also influenced by the places I’ve lived; South Yorkshire, South Africa and the Middle East – all regions with often hostile yet captivating environments.
Much of my work is based in my own photography of buildings and landscapes, which I endeavour to manifest on canvas or paper as social commentaries of the places and times I’m experiencing and have experienced in the past.
